cider-and-tequila-hot-toddy-made-with-apple-cider-cranberry-juice-drambuie-and-tequila

This recipe appeared in a long ago issue of Gourmet Magazine, and when I first saw it I thought it was a rather odd concoction –  and passed on it. Months later, when harvest season arrived and along with it fresh apple cider, the desire for a warming drink and a gathering of friends,  I dug it out and decided to give it a try. I’m immensely glad I did, since this  turned out to be an ideal Fall and holiday treat that I’ve continued to make for special occasions ever since.

Cider Tequila Toddy Recipe (from Gourmet Magazine January 1996)

  • 4 cups apple cider
  •  1 cup cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1/2 cup tequila
  • 1/4 cup orange-flavored liqueur*
  • Garnish: lime slices

In a saucepan heat cider and cranberry juice cocktail just until hot (do not let boil) and remove from heat. Stir in tequila and liqueur. Serve toddies in mugs, garnished with lime slices.

*I used to add the odd dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to this until I discovered that Drambuie liqueur has spicy notes that are perfect for this cocktail, with no other spice addition needed. I now use Drambuie for the orange liqueur portion.

I am usually not fond of hot cider drinks, but I will give this a try. Sometimes the oddest combinations yield the best results! And thanks for the heads-up on using Drambuie.

I had such the same reaction – but was so happily surprised when I tried it! Drambuie is $$$ but to me, so fitting.

This recipe is all over the internet with triple sec as the orange-flavored liqueur. I just got done doing taste test. One with triple sec and one with with Drambuie. The Drambuie makes it much more interesting and flavorful. Great suggestion, and that’s what I’ll be serving at my Christmas party this weekend. Thanks!
